Eli : Figure-toi que l'autre jour, je suis tombé sur une photo du Ben Bulben, cette montagne à Sligo qui ressemble à une immense vague de pierre figée. Ça m'a donné une envie folle de comprendre ce qui se cache derrière cette brume irlandaise. On dit souvent que c'est la terre des saints et des érudits, mais au fond, c'est quoi le secret de cette île pour avoir pondu autant de génies au mètre carré ?

Miles : C'est vrai que pour un petit bout de terre, le palmarès est assez dingue. On parle d'une tradition qui remonte quand même aux bardes du VIe siècle ! À l'époque, ils n'étaient pas juste là pour la déco : c'étaient les chroniqueurs officiels, des satiristes que personne n'osait chercher. En fait, l'écriture est littéralement gravée dans le paysage. Tu as encore des pierres dans le Kerry ou à Cork avec des inscriptions oghamiques, les toutes premières traces de leur alphabet.

Eli : Ah ouais, quand même... Donc l'idée que chaque buisson ou chaque lac a une histoire, ce n'est pas juste un cliché pour les touristes ?

Miles : Pas du tout. Prends Yeats, par exemple. Le gars était tellement hanté par Sligo qu'il appelait ça « la terre du désir du cœur ». Il a fini par se faire enterrer à Drumcliff, pile sous l'ombre de son Ben Bulben. Et ce qui est fou, c'est que cette connexion viscérale au sol, tu la retrouves chez tous, de la mélancolie rurale d'un Seamus Heaney jusqu'à l'extravagance d'un Oscar Wilde à Dublin. Pour comprendre leur philosophie, il faut vraiment qu'on regarde comment ils ont transformé cette tourbe et cette pluie en pur or littéraire.
