The Book of the Watchers consists of the first thirty-six chapters of the larger, composite Book of Enoch. Written around the third century BCE, this ancient text serves as an expansion of the cryptic verses found in Genesis 6:1–4 regarding the sons of God. It provides a deeper look into the origins of evil and knowledge, acting like an ancient deleted scene that influenced religious identity for centuries.
In her work, Annette Yoshiko Reed challenges the traditional idea that Judaism and Christianity simply parted ways early in history. Instead, she argues that the two traditions remained intertwined through shared stories and traditions, such as those involving fallen angels. Her research follows these connections from the Second Temple period through to the Middle Ages, revealing a complex and shared religious history.
The narrative of the fallen angels is primarily an expansion of Genesis 6:1–4. These four verses mention the sons of God coming down to earth, a brief and mysterious account that the Book of the Watchers develops into a much larger story. This expansion helped shape how millions of people understood the nature of evil and the history of human knowledge throughout the Second Temple period and beyond.
