Explore how to rebuild your self-identity and perceptual reality after gaslighting and pathological relationships in this episode on the post-toxic self.

You can’t change the narcissist, but you can change who and what you choose to be around. By changing the 'causes and conditions' of your environment, you can actually start to change the self and move from a state of chronic hyper-vigilance toward your own unique recipe for peace.
Away from narcissist, find your environment

The post-toxic self refers to the state of an individual after exiting an intense, high-pressure relationship where their reality was constantly rewritten by another person. Recovery involves addressing the systematic dismantling of one's perceptual reality caused by gaslighting. When a person has been told they are the problem or are 'too sensitive' for a long period, they must work to regain trust in their own eyes and ears to move past the feeling of being lost.
Pathological relationships can lead to a hijacked self-identity where the individual is led to believe they are the absolute worst version of themselves. This damage occurs because the person's reality is frequently manipulated by someone they love or respect. Over time, the victim stops trusting their own perceptions, making it difficult to navigate life or understand which way is 'up' once the relationship ends and the healing process begins.
Environment plays a crucial role in recovering from the 'toxic drip-feed' of high-pressure relationships. After living in a world where your identity was damaged and your reality was rewritten, changing your surroundings is a key part of reclaiming your perceptual reality. Healing requires moving away from the systematic gaslighting that made you feel like the cause of every problem, allowing you to rebuild a stable sense of self outside of that high-pressure fog.
