    El sistema fue diseñado inicialmente por Bismarck para aislar a Francia, creando la Triple Alianza (Alemania, Austria-Hungría e Italia). En respuesta, se formó la Triple Entente (Francia, Rusia y Gran Bretaña). Estas alianzas funcionaban como un efecto dominó: debido a cláusulas a menudo secretas, el compromiso de defender a un aliado obligaba a naciones enteras a entrar en guerra si su vecino era atacado. Esto transformó una disputa regional en los Balcanes en un incendio continental, ya que las potencias estaban "agarradas de la mano" y cualquier empujón en un extremo hacía caer a todos los demás.

    Los Balcanes eran conocidos como el "polvorín de Europa" debido a un vacío de poder dejado por la decadencia del Imperio Otomano. Serbia deseaba unir a los eslavos del sur, contando con el apoyo de Rusia, que buscaba una salida al Mediterráneo. Por otro lado, Austria-Hungría, al no tener colonias en otros continentes, veía en los Balcanes su única vía de expansión. Esta colisión de intereses imperiales y nacionalismos locales convirtió a la región en el escenario ideal para que un incidente, como el asesinato del archiduque Francisco Fernando, desencadenara una guerra a gran escala.

    Al movilizarse a más de 70 millones de militares, las naciones sufrieron una falta de mano de obra masculina que fue cubierta por las mujeres. Ellas pasaron del ámbito doméstico a ocupar puestos críticos en fábricas de armas, oficinas y transporte público, lo que supuso un impulso definitivo para el sufragio femenino y su independencia social. En la retaguardia, la población civil también sufrió el racionamiento extremo, la mortalidad por falta de alimentos y el uso masivo de la propaganda estatal, que buscaba mantener el apoyo a la guerra pintando al enemigo como un monstruo.

    El tratado es descrito como una "imposición" o "Diktat" más que como un acuerdo de paz. Al declarar a Alemania como única responsable del conflicto y obligarla a pagar reparaciones económicas astronómicas (que terminó de liquidar en 2010), se generó un profundo resentimiento y la leyenda de la "puñalada por la espalda". Además, el rediseño del mapa europeo creó nuevas naciones con minorías étnicas descontentas y dividió el Oriente Medio con líneas arbitrarias, dejando heridas abiertas que alimentarían el surgimiento de extremismos y futuros conflictos.
