Die Geschichte der Frankfurter Allgemeinen Zeitung begann am 1. November 1949 im Nachkriegsdeutschland. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt war das Grundgesetz erst wenige Monate alt und das Land lag noch in Trümmern. Jackson und Miles erklären im Podcast, wie 72 private Geldgeber zusammenkamen, um dieses neue journalistische Werk zu finanzieren und damit einen Meilenstein in der deutschen Pressegeschichte zu setzen.
Obwohl viele Redakteure der alten, 1943 von Hitler verbotenen Frankfurter Zeitung an Bord waren, betont Miles, dass die F.A.Z. keine bloße Kopie sein wollte. Die Gründer schrieben in der ersten Ausgabe deutlich, dass sie zwar Respekt vor der alten Leistung hatten, aber ein völlig neues Werk beginnen wollten. Es war also eher ein Neuanfang mit bewährtem journalistischem Handwerk als ein nahtloser Übergang.
Der Claim „Zeitung für Deutschland“ steht seit der Gründung unter dem Logo der Frankfurter Allgemeinen Zeitung. Jackson beschreibt diesen Slogan als heute fast schon wuchtig klingend, doch er unterstreicht den Anspruch des Blattes, eine überregionale Stimme im jungen Nachkriegsdeutschland zu sein. Die F.A.Z. etablierte sich damit schnell als eine der einflussreichsten Publikationen mit dem markanten riesigen nordischen Format.
