Canada isn’t a 'new' country—it’s a very old land with a deeply layered history of governance and diplomacy that stretches back to time immemorial.
The history of Canada from the Indigenous perspectives across the country.

The term time immemorial is a legal and cultural claim used by First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people to describe their deep, ancestral connection to the land. Rather than starting with European discovery, this perspective recognizes that Indigenous presence stretches back tens of thousands of years. It highlights a narrative that has existed since the very beginning, shifting the focus away from traditional colonial timelines toward a much older, continuous history.
Archaeological evidence shows human occupation in areas such as Haida Gwaii and the Tanana River Valley dating back thousands of years before European arrival. These findings support the long-standing presence of Indigenous peoples on the land. While carbon-dated artifacts provide fascinating scientific proof of ancient habitation, many Indigenous nations view their own oral histories as equally irrefutable evidence of their origins and their enduring place in the world.
Oral histories are vital because they offer origin stories and narratives that explain the lived experiences of Indigenous nations from their own perspectives. Many First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities use these traditions to document their history and connection to the land. By valuing oral history alongside archaeological data, we can move away from dry, academic dates and gain a more complete understanding of the deep historical narrative of the land.
