Основная идея заключается в имитации: одна яркая музыкальная мысль, называемая темой, последовательно проходит через разные голоса. Слушателю кажется, что звуки догоняют друг друга или убегают, создавая сложную драматургию. Со временем фуга превратилась из простого канона в вершину полифонии, где одна тема представляется в различных контрапунктических условиях.
