In summer 1956 near Chicago, Mary White and Marian Tompson were approached by numerous women at a church picnic who admired their ease in breastfeeding. These women shared similar stories of wanting to nurse but being unable to succeed. Having overcome breastfeeding challenges themselves, Mary and Marian decided to help others. They gathered five other experienced nursing mothers-Mary Ann Kerwin, Mary Ann Cahill, Betty Wagner, Edwina Froehlich, and Viola Lennon-and invited pregnant friends to Mary's home. Their simple offering of mother-to-mother information, encouragement, and support quickly outgrew Mary's living room. La Leche League has profoundly influenced infant care practices over the past half-century. When LLL began in 1956, women rarely participated actively in birth, babies were separated from mothers for up to 24 hours after delivery, and solids were introduced between 1-3 months. LLL encouraged women to trust their bodies during birth, advocated for immediate mother-baby contact after delivery, and recommended delaying solids until around six months-all practices now supported by research and medical organizations worldwide. Today's La Leche League operates in 68 countries with over 3,000 groups and accredited Leaders available to help mothers in person, through email, and by phone. The organization remains non-profit and non-sectarian, having helped millions of mothers through its mother-to-mother support model. LLL meetings form the heart of the organization-free, informal discussion groups held in homes or public locations that cover practical, physical, and psychological aspects of breastfeeding. These meetings provide information, encouragement, and friendship among mothers with common interests. All questions are welcome, and experienced mothers often offer insights from their own journeys. As a mother helped by LLL, you pass along that gift whenever you share birthing, breastfeeding, and mothering information with another woman, creating a never-ending ripple effect that improves communities beyond just breastfeeding. The founders express heartfelt thanks to those who contributed to LLL's development, particularly the thousands of volunteer Leaders whose daily efforts built the organization into what it is today. The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding stands as both a practical guide and a testament to the power of women supporting women. Its enduring message-that mothers innately possess the wisdom and ability to nourish their children-has transformed not just how babies are fed, but how mothers view themselves and their capabilities. In a world of increasingly complex parenting advice, this book offers something refreshingly simple yet profound: trust yourself, trust your baby, and when needed, reach out to those who've walked this path before you.
