Marlen Haushofer (1920–1970) fue una autora austriaca y la escritora de El muro, una novela distópica pionera que explora temas de aislamiento, supervivencia y la profunda conexión de la humanidad con la naturaleza. Nacida como Marie Helene Frauendorfer en la Alta Austria, Haushofer estudió literatura germánica en Viena y Graz antes de comenzar su carrera literaria en 1946.

Escribía mientras gestionaba las tareas del hogar y trabajaba en la consulta dental de su marido, componiendo en momentos robados que ella describía como "escribir al aire". El muro, publicada en 1963 y considerada su mayor logro, fue escrita minuciosamente cuatro veces a mano entre 1960 y 1963.

Su estilo introspectivo y su exploración inquebrantable de la experiencia femenina también dieron forma a obras notables como Un puñado de vida, La buhardilla y Matar a Stella.
