Eventually, he stops on a desolate beach under an inky black northeastern sky and deep Indian red overhead. The sun lies like a huge red hull on the horizon, and intensely green vegetation covers the reddish rocks. In this distant future, he witnesses monstrous crab-like creatures and eventually travels further to witness Earth's final days. Thirty million years hence, the red-hot sun obscures nearly a tenth of the sky, life seems extinct except for green slime on rocks, and the stars shine with intense brightness. During a solar eclipse, he glimpses a round, football-sized black thing with trailing tentacles hopping fitfully about-perhaps the last living creature on Earth. Fearing he might faint and be stranded in that awful twilight, he returns through time, unconscious for a long while on the machine. Eventually, the blinking succession of days and nights resumes, the sun regains its golden color, and the sky turns blue again. When the million dial reaches zero, he slows down, recognizing familiar architecture. Finally, the laboratory walls appear around him, and he gently stops the mechanism. This final journey extends the story's scope from human evolution to cosmic evolution. The dying Earth with its bloated red sun represents the ultimate futility of all human endeavors against the laws of thermodynamics. Even if humanity solves its social problems and avoids self-destruction, the universe itself has an expiration date. Yet amid this cosmic pessimism, Wells includes a remarkable detail-that tentacled creature hopping on the beach. Life persists, adapting to even the most hostile conditions. This suggests a kind of immortality not for individuals or species but for the principle of life itself, constantly reinventing itself in response to changing conditions. The Time Traveller's return to his own time completes the narrative circle. His laboratory remains unchanged, "as if I might have dreamed everything," yet the machine has moved-physical proof of his journey. The Warning Unheeded

The Time Traveller concludes his incredible tale, leaving his dinner guests stunned. The narrator wonders if he will ever return-perhaps he swept back into prehistoric times among blood-drinking savages or Jurassic beasts, or forward to an age where mankind's current problems are solved. Unlike the Time Traveller, who saw civilization as "a foolish heaping destined to destroy its makers," the narrator finds the future still black and blank, illuminated only by fragments of his story. For comfort, he keeps two strange white flowers-now shriveled and brittle-witnessing that even when mind and strength had gone, gratitude and tenderness still lived in the human heart. This epilogue perfectly balances hope and despair. The Time Traveller himself has vanished-perhaps continuing his explorations, perhaps meeting some grim fate. His warning about humanity's potential future remains unheeded, dismissed as fantasy by most of his listeners. This mirrors how we often treat warnings about climate change, inequality, and other existential threats-as interesting stories rather than calls to action. Yet the narrator keeps those two white flowers-physical evidence of Weena's affection and of humanity's enduring capacity for tenderness. They suggest that even if our species changes beyond recognition, something essential might survive-our ability to care for one another, to form bonds across differences, to experience gratitude. Wells leaves us with this profound ambiguity. The future remains unwritten, shaped by choices we make now. Will we heed the Time Traveller's warning about class division creating monstrous futures?
