Latimer solved critical manufacturing problems: he created protective cardboard envelopes for brittle filaments that expanded at the same rate as the filaments themselves, preventing breakage during carbonization. He also developed a superior method for attaching platinum wires to filaments by cutting rectangular slits and inserting flattened contacts that folded over to secure the connection-eliminating the problematic clamps, nuts, and screws used by Edison and Maxim. Latimer's innovations earned patents and were widely used throughout the industry's first crucial decade, with Engineering journal praising his "very philosophical method" that maintained filaments "in a state of efficiency for so long a time." By 1900, Edison declared his "squirted cellulose" filament the culmination of twenty years of development, unlikely to be improved. Yet General Electric, concerned about competitors' ceramic and tantalum filaments that used less electricity, sought to leapfrog the competition with tungsten. Though tungsten could burn at the same brightness as carbon using only one-third the power and last much longer due to its high melting temperature, its brittleness made it seemingly impossible to shape into the hairpin turns needed for filaments.

These sheets could be rapidly produced with consistent precision using pre-tooled dies, then fused together with silver. As the war ended, Raytheon needed new markets, and Spencer recognized the potential applications of microwave heating beyond military use. Knowing how self-driving cars or gene modification works reveals that solutions were chosen for identifiable reasons that can be reexamined. We must avoid both extremes in framing ethical questions: Hannah Arendt's view that engineers simply unleash uncontrollable forces, and Silicon Valley techno-utopians who believe technology will solve every problem. These caricatures remove the human aspect of engineering-the struggle to create under adverse conditions using human ingenuity. Building an ethical framework requires first understanding what engineers do before addressing deeper questions about making the world better.
