Stephen Crane (1871-1900) fue un novelista, poeta y periodista estadounidense, mejor conocido por su obra maestra de la Guerra Civil El rojo emblema del valor. Publicada en 1895, esta innovadora novela bélica explora temas como el miedo, el valor y el trauma psicológico a través del joven soldado de la Unión Henry Fleming.

Sorprendentemente, Crane elaboró esta narrativa de batalla intensamente realista enteramente a través de la imaginación y la investigación, sin haber experimentado nunca el combate de primera mano cuando la escribió a los 23 años.

Pionero del naturalismo y el realismo literario, Crane también fue autor de obras notables como Maggie: una chica de la calle y el aclamado relato corto "El bote abierto". Trabajó como corresponsal de guerra cubriendo conflictos en Grecia, Cuba y Puerto Rico.
