These were the very dreamlike causeways and settlements Spanish conquistadores had described-the ones Fawcett believed in and scientists had dismissed as myths. Heckenberger had uncovered twenty pre-Columbian settlements in the Xingu, occupied between A.D. 800 and 1600, laid out along cardinal points with roads at precise geometric angles. Each settlement cluster contained 2,000-5,000 people-comparable to medieval European cities. The discovery had upended traditional views of the Amazon as unable to sustain the civilization Fawcett envisioned. Though Fawcett never found Z in his lifetime, his intuition about the Amazon's capacity to support sophisticated ancient civilizations had been vindicated. The lost city wasn't a mirage-it had simply been hiding in plain sight, waiting for science to catch up with one explorer's remarkable vision.
