Barry Morris Goldwater (1909–1998) fue un senador estadounidense y arquitecto del conservadurismo estadounidense moderno. Galvanizó un movimiento político con su obra fundamental La conciencia de un conservador.

Senador republicano por Arizona durante cinco mandatos, Goldwater defendió el gobierno limitado, los derechos de los estados y un anticomunismo militante, temas centrales en este manifiesto de 1960 que se convirtió en el plan maestro de la ideología conservadora de la posguerra.
