"My training sessions are lasting longer now, with each move gaining strength. I'm healing faster too-scratches and bruises disappear quickly, and muscle pain recovers faster," she notes after removing Seria's charm bracelet, which she suspects was keeping her weak.
Micai's training takes an unexpected turn when she steals a pair of elven daggers from the weapons shed. These beautiful silver blades covered in ornate letters belong to Mr. Valor, the elf instructor who teaches Defence class. When he catches her with his weapons, instead of punishing her, he offers to train her properly. They begin meeting every other night in an abandoned building that was once the original training area before a fire caused deaths and its abandonment.
Under Mr. Valor's guidance, Micai progresses from daggers and swords to spears, mastering most weapons with surprising speed. "He treats me as an equal rather than a student, teaching me advanced techniques and sparring without holding back," she observes. This accelerated learning ability, along with her enhanced strength and healing, makes her wonder if something fundamental has changed about her nature since her rebirth.
The results of her training become evident when she's forced to defend herself. When Jeremy, Jake, and another boy corner her with lewd comments and threats, she takes them all down efficiently-breaking Jeremy's nose, winding Jake with a kick, and knocking out the third boy. Despite his clearly unhinged nature, Micai finds herself drawn to Annex. He seems to recognize the darkness within her, telling her, "Never lose that, Red. That fight in you...Never let anyone take it away. With it, you can do almost anything." He calls her "Red" because, as he later explains, she's "dangerous, fearless, and his salvation."
Ezra presents a different kind of danger. With his turquoise eyes flecked with lilac and wavy brown and lilac hair, he initially appears to be a playboy, constantly surrounded by admirers. However, Micai soon discovers his playful demeanor masks a protective and potentially dangerous nature. When Xander insults her, Ezra coldly intervenes, later confessing, "I'm not the nice guy everyone thinks I am. Only my family matters, and that includes you now."
Mallyn and Creed complete the quartet. Mallyn is quiet and observant, while Creed is arrogant and initially hostile toward Micai, seeing her as "just another clingy junior" seeking attention. However, their dynamics shift when Micai stands up to Creed, refusing to be intimidated by his power or status.

Later, Micai has a direct encounter with a massive blue-eyed beast that pursues her through the forest. Though it could easily kill her, it mysteriously spares her life, even licking her wounds to heal them before disappearing. This beast later turns out to be Mallyn, one of the Infernal Four, who possesses the ability to transform into this powerful creature.
The situation escalates dramatically during the Winter Ball when a bloodied female student bursts in screaming about magical beasts attacking the academy. Pure chaos ensues as students and faculty battle numerous creatures that seem to be attacking mindlessly without self-preservation instinct. Micai joins the fight, using her combat training to help take down a massive bull-lion-goat hybrid creature alongside Grey, one of Morgan's companions who can shift into a polar bear.
Adding to the mystery are Micai's own changing abilities. Since her rebirth, she's noticed enhanced strength, accelerated healing, and improved senses. After accidentally breaking a bathroom tap, she discovers she can mold metal with her bare hands. During training, she punches a tree with such force that her fist embeds deep into the trunk, creating a massive hole. "Witches and warlocks don't possess this kind of physical strength, and I'm certainly not a shifter, so what am I?" she wonders.
The strange black marks that appeared on her hips after her rebirth later spread to her ankles as well-small curved lines with crescent shapes above them that feel strangely familiar, "as if they were always meant to be there." These marks seem connected to her enhanced abilities, though their true nature remains unclear.
Morgan, who becomes an unexpected ally, possesses a secret ability to read auras-detecting lies, identifying powers, and seeing through to people's true selves. When she looks at Micai, she can tell she's "something different" now compared to the beginning of the year, though she seems confused by what she sees in Micai's aura.

The escalating tensions between Micai and her tormentors culminate in a shocking act of violence when Ivy Harris, Jeremy Colton, Jake Andrews, and Alice Parker drug Micai's food in the cafeteria and kidnap her. She awakens in complete darkness, hands and legs bound with rope, inside what she later realizes is the detainment shelter for sixth-year Defense class-where they keep wild magical beasts for training.
"This isn't just a cruel prank," Micai realizes with horror. "They've thrown me into the forest at night, weakened by drugs, with magical beasts set loose to hunt me. They're actually trying to kill me."
Despite her weakened state, Micai manages to free herself from the restraints and escape the shelter, only to find herself in a remote part of the forest with jagged rocks cutting into her bare feet. Almost immediately, she's confronted by a creature resembling a cross between a horse and wingless wyvern, its mouth dripping black saliva as it howls.
What follows is a desperate fight for survival as Micai, still affected by the drugs, tries to outrun and outsmart the beast. "My feet bleed as I race through the forest, rocks and roots stabbing into my soles. Though still weakened from the drug, my anger fuels me forward," she recounts. When the creature catches up to her, slamming her against a tree and breaking several bones, she grabs a fallen branch to defend herself.
In a display of quick thinking and determination, Micai manages to kick the beast off a cliff edge, sending it tumbling to its death on the rocks below. However, her victory is short-lived as another identical creature appears. Before it can reach her, the massive blue-eyed beast-Mallyn in his transformed state-intervenes, easily killing the smaller creature by ripping out its throat.
This attempted murder marks a turning point for Micai. Any hesitation she might have had about seeking revenge against her tormentors vanishes. When she later confronts Alice Parker in Music class, she delivers a chilling warning: "You want me to be the bad guy, because then it makes all the shit you've done to me okay. But if I'm going to be treated like the bad guy... I might as well become one."
The incident also strengthens her bond with the Infernal Four, particularly Annex, who seems to understand her desire for vengeance. "Always give more than you get, Red," he advises her. "If they knock you down once, get back up and bury them. I might even lend a hand."

When Kane tries to bully her in Defence class, she executes a perfect combat move that drops him to his knees. When Dean and Leon attempt to assault her, she fights back fiercely despite being outnumbered.
Perhaps most significantly, Micai reclaims her identity by rejecting the name that ties her to her toxic family. "Call me Micai," she tells Mr. Valor when he addresses her as "Ms. Bane." This simple act represents her refusal to be defined by her family connections or past traumas.
