Similarly, "Since death awaits all equally, blessed is he who dies not late but well"-a reminder that the quality of our life matters more than its duration. Musonius's teaching methods are also revealed in these fragments. He believed that philosophical principles should remain in the soul permanently "like health-giving food," not be cast out "like medicine after curing illness." When another asked Musonius to intercede with his master, Musonius challenged him: "What! Do you mean that I should intercede in your behalf when I can get the same result from you yourself?" Perhaps most revealing is how Musonius discouraged applause during his lectures. When audiences responded with excessive praise, he considered both speaker and listeners to be wasting their time. A person truly hearing a philosopher, he argued, should experience internal transformation-shame, repentance, joy-rather than external displays. The mind engaged with useful philosophical teaching has no leisure for extravagant praise, as it is busy confronting its own moral condition.
