Carlos César Salvador Arana, conocido como Carlos Castaneda (1925–1998), fue el antropólogo de origen peruano y autor superventas de Relatos de poder, una obra fundamental en el chamanismo y la espiritualidad New Age. Publicado en 1974, Relatos de poder narra la conclusión de su aprendizaje con Don Juan Matus, un chamán yaqui, explorando temas de conciencia alterada, realidad no ordinaria y misticismo indígena.

Castaneda obtuvo su licenciatura y doctorado en antropología en la UCLA, donde sus primeros libros —Las enseñanzas de Don Juan, Una realidad aparte y Viaje a Ixtlán— sirvieron como su base académica, aunque su autenticidad ha sido ampliamente cuestionada.

A pesar de la controversia que rodea la base fáctica de sus narrativas, Castaneda se convirtió en un icono cultural y padre del movimiento New Age, apareciendo en la portada de la revista Time en 1973.
