The Lasting Impact: When the Nightmare Doesn't End

Identity theft creates lasting damage beyond financial losses, leaving victims with persistent fear and psychological trauma. Even after taking proper steps to address the immediate theft, victims often face ongoing consequences as their information may continue circulating among criminals. Identity theft resembles a chronic disease, often occurring in multiple episodes with effects that persist long after the initial crime. Even when financial losses are minimal or nonexistent, the emotional impact can be devastating. Victims live in constant fear of the thief returning or their information being sold to other criminals. The psychological torment can lead to insomnia, relationship strain, and even divorce. Some victims go to extreme lengths for peace of mind, changing their names or Social Security numbers. When thieves commit crimes in your name, the consequences can haunt you indefinitely. Unlike credit records, there's no easy way to check your criminal record until police stop you. Abagnale experienced this firsthand when transporting his son's belongings after his college graduation. A state trooper pulled him over, claiming he looked "sleepy," then ran his information and discovered his decades-old criminal history from his teenage years. Despite explaining these were ancient charges and offering proof of his current FBI consulting work, he endured a humiliating search and interrogation. Trudy Aikens' identity theft nightmare began when her company hired a temporary worker without proper background checks. This woman forged Trudy's signature on corporate checks and opened multiple credit cards in her name, running up thousands in charges. Though the thief was eventually caught stealing another coworker's identity, the aftermath continues to plague Trudy decades later. She made over 135 phone calls in just two months trying to resolve the fraud, and still maintains credit watches at all bureaus that prevent her from opening new accounts without verification. Identity theft can inflict profound emotional trauma when it involves deceased loved ones. In one case, a widow discovered her husband's identity was stolen by an illegal immigrant after receiving a traffic citation for him months after he died in the World Trade Center on 9/11. Another elderly woman had her deceased husband's accounts emptied by his nurse. Perhaps most heartbreaking was a mother who, nineteen years after losing her six-year-old daughter in a car accident, learned someone had assumed her child's identity to join the military reserves. These violations force families to relive their grief, as if they must "rebury" their loved ones all over again.

The Path Forward: Systemic Solutions for a Growing Crisis

Identity theft is still in its first act, with more devastating chapters to come unless we collectively act to change course. The crime is simply too lucrative for criminals to abandon. While we shouldn't become paranoid, deleting legitimate emails or ignoring real communications out of fear, we must become smarter and more careful. Our society tends to be reactive rather than proactive-people readily buy insurance for their homes but fail to take preventative measures to protect their identities until after they've been victimized. Every organization in America must ask: "What are we doing to protect the identity of our customers and employees?" As consumers, we must demand proper answers. In bank consulting work, Abagnale often observes tellers with unnecessary access to complete customer information. Proper management identity software would restrict access, requiring higher authorization to view sensitive data like Social Security numbers. While companies thoroughly vet executives, they often neglect screening cleaning staff who have extensive access to sensitive information. Janitors working after hours can access unlocked file cabinets, documents left on desks, and unattended computers. Companies must better screen all employees with potential access to personal data, including temporary workers and those in payroll and personnel departments. Banks' fraud protection measures remain woefully inadequate. A Javelin Strategy & Research study found only half of banks offer 24/7 account-shutoff services, and few send alerts for suspicious activity. Banking regulators have ordered stronger login procedures beyond simple passwords, but banks typically implement the cheapest solutions rather than the most effective. We need reasonable security measures that may slightly slow transactions but protect our identities. Banks and credit card companies resist security measures that might inconvenience customers or reduce instant credit approvals. "Blink" cards that merely need waving at terminals prioritize speed over security. Several states have enacted "freeze" laws allowing consumers to block credit access without permission-a worthwhile trade-off despite lenders' complaints about delayed credit approvals. Social Security numbers, originally created in 1936 to track earnings for benefits, have become essential for daily life-and prime targets for identity thieves. With approximately 230 million Social Security numbers in circulation as of 2006, criminals have 230 million opportunities to steal identities. We need uniform national legislation restricting their usage, as they're currently displayed in public records across 41 states and on millions of government ID cards. The most frightening aspect of identity theft is victims being saddled with criminal records that won't disappear. Some states have implemented solutions like California's Identity Theft Registry and "identity theft passports" in Virginia and Ohio, but these programs lack publicity and widespread acceptance. The real solution is simple: if you can prove you didn't commit a crime, it should be completely expunged from your record-not just marked as questionable-and this process should be convenient and inexpensive. While we may never completely eradicate identity theft, we can significantly slow its growth by taking prevention seriously and pressing businesses, legislators, and law enforcement to do the same. The stakes couldn't be higher-not just our financial security, but our very identities hang in the balance.
