The connection between biology and football isn't literal-players don't actually behave like flocks of birds or schools of fish. Rather, the link exists in the mathematical models we apply. The techniques developed for analyzing collective animal behavior can reveal profound insights about team organization in football. While researchers have made important strides, many more mathematical methods from animal studies could be transferred to football analytics. As Bill Shankly famously said, football is "more important than life and death." This reveals both the obsession that consumed his life and the way football transcends everyday troubles. I recall how my grandfather used our Liverpool-Everton rivalry as a way to lift my spirits when I was hospitalized as a child, and how I later snuck in to banter with my dying grandfather about our rival teams. This football discourse served a deeper purpose-providing a common framework for developing thinking and communication across generations. This love of discussion through football parallels my journey to becoming a mathematician-driven less by fascination with numbers than by a desire to communicate about the world. Football helps communicate mathematics, while mathematics illuminates every aspect of football from gambling to strategy, from synchronized attacks to team geometry.
