His love for gourmet food led him to occasionally visit restaurants, where his men would collect diners' phones before Chapo arrived, returning them after he paid everyone's bill. After a near-capture in Los Cabos, Guzman devised an elaborate communications system. Rather than simply switching BlackBerrys, he implemented a "mirror" system where messages passed through two intermediaries using iPads over public Wi-Fi networks to avoid cellular tracking. In February, Mexico's elite marine special forces (SEMAR) launched operations in Sinaloa. Unlike the slow-moving, corruption-prone army, these marines were nimble, secretive, and battle-hardened from fighting the Zetas cartel. The operation's first breakthrough came February 13th when they captured Sinaloa assassins whose confiscated phones provided crucial intelligence leading them to Mario Hidalgo Arguello (El Nariz), Guzman's personal assistant. On February 16th, marines captured El Nariz when he went to pick up Guzman's late-night takeout food. Under questioning, he immediately revealed Chapo's location in Culiacan. Before dawn, marines raided a cream-colored house on Rio Humaya Street but struggled for ten minutes against its remarkable steel front door, which was water-filled to prevent heat transfer from battering rams. Once inside, they found surveillance cameras throughout but no people - only a hydraulically-lifted bathtub revealing a tunnel entrance. Guzman had activated the escape hatch by pushing a plug into an electrical outlet while flicking a hidden switch on the vanity mirror, fleeing through Culiacan's sewer system. The marines intensified pressure on Guzman by occupying his safe houses and targeting his support network. When El Condor's previously silent BlackBerry suddenly activated in Mazatlan on February 20, authorities traced the signal despite concerns that Guzman might have already fled to the mountains. On February 21, approximately forty marines along with agents from the DEA, U.S. Marshals, and Homeland Security converged on Mazatlan. Using geolocation technology, they traced El Condor's signal to the Miramar, a twelve-story oceanfront condominium building. Inside apartment 401, they discovered Guzman's chef, a nanny with his two-year-old twins, and his wife Emma Coronel who pleaded "Don't kill him!" as Guzman fled to the bathroom with an assault rifle. Cornered and concerned for his family, Guzman surrendered within minutes. As predicted, Chapo did escape again in July 2015, fleeing through a sophisticated tunnel with lighting, air-conditioning and a rail-mounted motorcycle. After another manhunt, he was recaptured in 2016, extradited to the U.S., tried in Brooklyn, and sentenced to life at ADX Florence.

The Power Behind the Throne: How Television Created a President

Mark Burnett, a former British paratrooper turned television producer, transformed American television with "Survivor" in 2000. Looking for his next hit, Burnett conceived a corporate-themed competition show while watching a BBC documentary about the business world. In 2002, Burnett rented Trump's Wollman Rink for the "Survivor" finale broadcast. Noticing Trump in the audience, Burnett excessively praised the "Trump Wollman skating rink" multiple times, immediately impressing the businessman who proclaimed, "You're a genius!" This encounter would lead to their partnership on "The Apprentice," making both men hundreds of millions while fundamentally reshaping Trump's public image. By 2003, Trump had become a local tabloid figure whose businesses had foundered. "The Apprentice" mythologized him anew as an icon of American success. Katherine Walker, an early producer on the show, acknowledged, "Donald would not be president had it not been for that show." Burnett's Hobbesian worldview shaped Survivor, which he described as "quite a mean game, just like life is kind of a mean game." Though he presented the show as a window into raw human nature, the scenario was highly engineered-contestants carefully selected for combustibility, hundreds of hours of footage edited down to create compelling narratives. By 2016, Burnett found himself blamed for Trump's political rise. The Apprentice was built on artifice - a show where Trump's image as a business titan was deliberately manufactured. Despite some producers seeing it as camp, audiences took it seriously. The show portrayed Trump with reverent camera angles shooting from below, choreographed entrances with dramatic music, and the carefully constructed "boardroom" with its menacing gloom. Trump's properties were constantly featured - Trump Tower, Trump National Golf Club, Trump Ice water, and the soon-bankrupt Trump Taj Mahal. The show transformed "Donald" into the authoritative "Mr. Trump" and rehabilitated his public image from "ogre" to "hero." Burnett and Trump developed a symbiotic relationship where Burnett played the deferential partner. He called Trump his "soul mate," redirected spotlight to Trump during interviews, and accepted his quirks (like being served McDonald's at Trump Tower). "It's Batman and Robin, and I'm clearly Robin," Burnett admitted. While Burnett claimed Trump was "giving back" through the show, Trump was candid about his motives: "My jet's going to be in every episode... it'll be great for my brand." After meeting actress Roma Downey in 2004, Burnett underwent a surprising religious transformation. The man who once told Esquire religion was "a waste of time" reinvented himself as a devout Christian. He and Downey married in 2007 and describe themselves as "the noisiest Christians in Hollywood." Burnett pivoted to "family-friendly franchises," producing Christian-themed programming like The Bible miniseries. Trump's presidency borrowed heavily from The Apprentice's tropes. His campaign announcement at Trump Tower featured him descending the gold escalator - choreography repeatedly used on the show. Reports suggested people were paid $50 as extras to cheer at the announcement, mimicking TV production techniques. Former contestants like Randal Pinkett and Kwame Jackson have spoken out about Trump's racism, with Pinkett describing how Trump asked him, as the first Black winner, to share his title with a white woman contestant. Despite his Trump connection being toxic in liberal Hollywood, Burnett faced minimal professional backlash. After joining MGM Television in 2015, he reportedly cultivated a relationship with Kevin Ulrich, chairman of MGM's board. When CEO Gary Barber was unexpectedly fired with a $260 million payout, Burnett was promoted to chairman of television three months later. MGM's lawyer Marvin Putnam insists "Mark Burnett cannot release the tapes" due to binding contractual obligations that would expose the studio to lawsuits from anyone who appeared with Trump. With potentially 60,000 hours of Apprentice footage, former staffers recall Trump regularly making crude comments about women's bodies, saying things like "How about those boobs? Wouldn't you like to fuck her?" Psychologist Richard Levak, who consulted on The Apprentice, notes that what made Trump magnetic as a reality TV star - "the energy, the impulsiveness, the inability to articulate a complete thought" - is precisely what has captivated the world as president. "That somebody can become that successful while also being that emotionally undisciplined - it's so macabre that you have to watch it," Levak explains. The story of Trump and Burnett illustrates how the line between reality and television has blurred in modern America. It shows how a carefully crafted persona can become more powerful than reality itself, and how entertainment values have infiltrated our most serious institutions, with consequences that continue to reverberate through our political landscape.

True to her approach, she focused on humanizing him, using his American nickname "Jahar" and spending countless hours understanding his story, driven by her belief that "people aren't born evil." Known as "Saint Judy" among peers for her humility and dedication, Clarke hasn't given mainstream interviews in decades. She's redefined success as securing life sentences, viewing each case as a lesson in human behavior and frailty. After studying psychology and law, Clarke joined the federal public defenders office in 1977, becoming a pioneering female criminal defense lawyer. Her methodology involves exhaustive investigation into clients' social histories, documenting patterns of trauma and circumstance. She opposes capital punishment, believing "legalized homicide is not a good idea for a civilized nation." During Tsarnaev's trial, Clarke's team maintained physical proximity to their client, demonstrating his humanity to jurors. Despite devastating evidence, including Tsarnaev's boat confession, they portrayed him as a gentle teenager corrupted by his radicalized older brother Tamerlan.
