Flynn's great disappointment is how higher education has responded to this mental broadening by pushing specialization rather than conceptual, transferable knowledge. In a study comparing university seniors' GPAs to their performance on tests of critical thinking, Flynn found essentially zero correlation. While boys learned trades and left as teenagers, girls typically remained unless they married.
What distinguished the figlie's training was not its rigor but its breadth-they learned to play every instrument their institution owned, including obscure ones like the "violoncello all'inglese" that even music scholars debate about. Their multi-instrumental capabilities enabled profound musical experimentation that laid the foundation for the modern orchestra.
Today's approach to musical training contradicts what made the figlie successful. Modern parents obsess over choosing the "right" instrument for very young children and starting early, following the Tiger Woods or "Tiger Mother" model of choosing early, focusing narrowly, and never wavering.
Research by John Sloboda found surprising patterns in musical development. Studies of music students aged 8-18 showed that early practice amounts didn't distinguish future elite performers from average ones. When asked how to destroy a stomach tumor with rays that would damage healthy tissue at high intensity but be ineffective at low intensity, only 10% of people solve it initially. However, when given analogies like a general dividing troops to converge on a fortress or a fire chief arranging neighbors to throw water simultaneously, success rates rise dramatically.
Our natural tendency toward the "inside view"-making judgments based narrowly on the details of a particular project-often leads to poor decisions. Daniel Kahneman experienced this firsthand when his curriculum development team estimated two years for completion but took eight years-matching the pattern of similar projects they had initially ignored.

His simple, three-page solution-applying vibration technology to "chocolate mousse" oil-was immediately recognized as effective.
Research shows that for intractable problems, specialists often get stuck in "the Einstellung effect"-using only familiar methods even when better ones exist. Karim Lakhani's research on InnoCentive found that "the further the problem was from the solver's expertise, the more likely they were to solve it."
