Carolina Maria de Jesus (1914–1977) fue una diarista brasileña y autora de gran éxito de Quarto de Despejo: Diário de uma Favelada (La casa de cartón), una memoria pionera sobre la vida en las favelas de São Paulo. Nacida en Sacramento, Minas Gerais, de Jesus tuvo solo dos años de educación formal, pero desarrolló una pasión por la escritura mientras trabajaba como recolectora de chatarra y criaba sola a tres hijos en la favela de Canindé.

Las entradas de su diario, escritas en trozos de papel encontrados, exponían las duras realidades de la pobreza, el hambre y la desigualdad racial. Descubierto por el periodista Audálio Dantas en 1958, el diario se publicó en agosto de 1960 y vendió más de 10.000 ejemplares en su primera semana.

El libro fue traducido a trece idiomas, distribuido en 46 países y se convirtió en un éxito de ventas internacional en América del Norte y Europa. De Jesus publicó varias obras posteriores, incluyendo Casa de Alvenaria (1961). Quarto de Despejo sigue siendo uno de los libros más exitosos de Brasil y una obra fundamental de la literatura afrobrasileña.
