Kindling the Flame: Philip's Path to War

After Alexander's death, Philip became supreme sachem of the Pokanokets at age twenty-four in August 1662. Philip maintained his authority through displays of status, wearing elaborate clothing and traveling with an entourage. His position was challenged in 1667 when his interpreter John Sassamon betrayed him by altering Philip's will, later fleeing to join the Praying Indians. This incident soured Philip's view of Christian converts. Facing financial pressures, Philip began selling Native territories at an unprecedented rate. While only fourteen Indian deeds were registered in Plymouth from 1650-1659, seventy-six were recorded between 1665-1675. He lamented how the English, once protected by his father Massasoit, now refused to honor their obligations. Tensions escalated in March 1671 when Philip led sixty armed warriors near English settlements. A confrontation at Taunton ended with Philip's forced submission, including surrendering weapons and signing a humiliating treaty requiring him to pay tribute as Plymouth's subject. This convinced Philip that war was inevitable. He systematically sold land to finance weapons, including a record-breaking sale of four square miles along the Taunton River for 143. By 1675, Philip had arranged with allied tribes to begin fighting the following spring. The situation reached its breaking point when John Sassamon warned Governor Winslow about Philip's war preparations and was subsequently found murdered at Assawompsett Pond. Despite insufficient evidence and English law requiring two witnesses, a jury convicted three of Philip's men for the murder. The executions in June, particularly the controversial killing of Tobias's son after a failed hanging, effectively sealed the path to war.

By mid-June 1675, hundreds of Pokanoket warriors prepared for war, painted and armed with muskets. Philip planned to begin with property destruction on Sunday, June 20, during English church services. The English advanced toward Mount Hope, finding burned settlements, desecrated Bibles, and the mutilated remains of eight Englishmen. At Philip's abandoned village, they found only his discarded hat and broken drums. The Indians had fled to Pocasset, where Philip joined Weetamoo. Plymouth forces built a fort at Mount Hope while Massachusetts troops diverted to pressure the neutral Narragansetts, a strategy that alienated potential allies. By July 19, the combined forces pursued Weetamoo and Philip into a treacherous swamp where Indians held the advantage. Five Englishmen fell to invisible shooters in the vegetation. Major Cudworth halted pursuit to build another fort, believing they could starve out the trapped Indians. However, on July 30, they discovered their quarry had vanished-several hundred Pokanokets and Pocassets were heading toward Nipmuck territory. In a masterful escape, Philip led 250 warriors and their families across the river at low tide, using crude rafts to reach the western bank. Though he had lost his homeland, Philip's escape transformed a local conflict into a regional war. His father Massasoit's earlier alliances with the Nipmucks provided both sanctuary and reinforcements. As Philip spread the conflict across New England, Benjamin Church returned to Duxbury where his wife Alice became pregnant. While Plymouth remained quiet, violence erupted across the Massachusetts frontier as the war expanded rapidly.

In a Strange Way: The War's Darkest Hours

By winter 1623, Plymouth had evolved into a disciplined community united by faith, family, and Bradford's leadership. In contrast, Wessagussett, twenty miles north, languished - its unattached settlers falling into despair after building their fort. Philip, increasingly desperate, led his band to Schaghticoke on the Hoosic River, seeking French support. A French official had promised him three hundred warriors, unlimited ammunition, and a naval blockade of New England. Following his father's strategy of European alliances, Philip established winter quarters there with his captain Annawon. His attempts to ally with the feared Mohawk warriors near Albany failed when Governor Andros secured their loyalty through the "Covenant Chain" alliance. In late February, the Mohawks routed Philip's forces at Schaghticoke, forcing him to flee eastward, his reputation diminished. During this time, Mary Rowlandson endured captivity following Lancaster's attack on February 10. When Indians burned her garrison house, she fled with her children but was shot, the bullet also wounding her six-year-old daughter Sarah. Surprisingly, Philip showed her kindness during their travels, offering food and assistance. The Indians demonstrated remarkable survival skills, moving two thousand people across difficult terrain while evading English forces. They crossed the swollen Bacquag River on hastily built rafts and sustained themselves through winter, impressing even Rowlandson with their resourcefulness. March 1676 brought devastating raids across New England. Captain Pierce's force suffered a crushing defeat when Canonchet's warriors ambushed them, killing fifty-five English and ten Praying Indians. Canonchet then led 1,500 Indians in destroying Rehoboth and Providence. During Providence's burning, Roger Williams attempted peace negotiations, but the Indians vowed to continue their campaign. By early April, the Indians seemed poised for victory, with colonists weakened by influenza. However, Connecticut forces captured Canonchet near the Blackstone River. Refusing to negotiate peace, he was executed by a Pequot firing squad, with Mohegans and Niantics dismembering and burning his remains. His death marked a turning point, removing a charismatic leader who had united several Native groups into an effective fighting force.

Benjamin Church traveled to Plymouth's General Court in June, through the peaceful Cape Cod region where Praying Indians were well-treated. With English attitudes toward Native allies improving, Church opted to build his own force rather than serve under Major Bradford's command. Against Rhode Island officials' wishes, Church paddled to Sakonnet to negotiate with Awashonks, the female sachem. Armed with rum and tobacco, and after convincing his wife Alice, he met with Awashonks, her son Peter, and warrior Nompash. Church secured their alliance by promising Plymouth's protection if they abandoned Philip. Nompash pledged to help capture "Philip's head before Indian corn be ripe." Church brought unique maritime influences to Native warfare, using a buccaneer-style sword and sailor's terminology. His strategy of showing mercy to cooperative Indians proved highly effective-his small band consistently outperformed larger colonial forces in capturing Indians. By late July, Philip's followers were exhausted and starving. Church's mixed force of eighteen Englishmen and twenty-two Indians cornered a large group near Bridgewater. Through clever tactics, including a bluff by the Sakonnet warrior Matthias, they captured 173 Indians, though Philip himself escaped when a guard failed his duty. By August, the war was ending. Native Americans had lost 60-80% of their southern New England population through battle, disease, starvation, and slavery. While Plymouth Colony lost 8% of its men, the Indians lacked external resources to sustain their resistance. On August 11, Church received intelligence about Philip's location from a deserter. With a small company including Sakonnet warriors and a Pocasset Indian named Alderman, they surrounded Philip's camp. During the attack, Philip fled into the swamp where Alderman shot him through the heart. The Sakonnets dragged Philip's body through the mud, and Church ordered it quartered. Philip's head was displayed on Plymouth's fort palisade for over twenty years, becoming the town's most notable attraction.

Young Pokanokets, with diminished lands, increasingly opposed English presence, while the Pilgrims' children coveted Indian territory. Philip used war threats to appease his warriors while avoiding conflict, but Governor Winslow's handling of Sassamon's murder case ultimately sparked violence. Both sides wanted autonomy, but New England had become irreversibly shared since Massasoit's alliance with the Pilgrims. Bradford and Massasoit's understanding of necessary accommodation was forgotten by their descendants. Benjamin Church continued his military career after the war, leading five expeditions against French and Indians in Maine between 1689 and 1704. He embodied America's first frontiersman - part Pilgrim, part Indian - who embraced the wilderness his ancestors feared. Modern Plymouth blends historical authenticity with tourism. The Plimoth Plantation and Wampanoag Homesite stand near the unmarked site of Clark's garrison, where violence and retaliation played out in 1676. Church's approach - learning from enemies, favoring coercion over slaughter, and treating adversaries humanely - prefigured American ideals of liberty and justice. This is exemplified in his treatment of an elderly Indian captive named "Conscience," whom he saved from slavery by arranging local accommodation - a small but significant gesture of humanity amid the war's aftermath.
