Energy became a critical intersection of economics and geopolitics during her tenure. Clinton's journey toward human rights advocacy began in her Methodist upbringing in Park Ridge, Illinois. The pivotal moment came when her youth minister Don Jones took their suburban youth group to hear Dr. Martin Luther King speak in Chicago. Despite some parents' objections that King was a "rabble-rouser," Clinton attended and was transfixed by his speech "Remaining Awake through a Revolution." This experience challenged her to reconcile her father's reverence for American democracy with the reality that many Americans weren't experiencing the freedom and equality promised in our founding documents. In September 1995, as First Lady leading the U.S. delegation to the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, Clinton delivered a speech declaring that "human rights are women's rights and women's rights are human rights." She named specific abuses against women - domestic violence, forced prostitution, rape as a tactic of war, genital mutilation - as violations of human rights. The speech received a standing ovation and has resonated globally for nearly twenty years. Following Beijing, there was exciting progress: discriminatory laws repealed, creation of UN Women, Security Council resolutions recognizing women's role in peacemaking, and increased research on women's economic potential. Yet despite these advances, women and girls still comprised the majority of the world's unhealthy, unfed, and unpaid. Women held less than 22% of legislative seats worldwide, faced legal barriers to economic participation in over a hundred countries, and continued to earn less than men even in America. As Secretary of State in 2009, Clinton appointed Melanne Verveer as the first Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women's Issues to help integrate women's participation into all aspects of foreign policy. Tired of being merely nodded at when raising women's issues, she built a case based on hard data showing how women's participation directly supports security and prosperity. The economic evidence was compelling - women's increased workforce participation added $3.5 trillion to U.S. GDP over four decades, while Latin America saw extreme poverty decrease 30% through women's economic gains. Clinton worked to extend human dignity to historically excluded groups, including LGBT people. After Ugandan activist David Kato was murdered following public threats against him, she confronted President Museveni about Uganda's proposed law making homosexuality punishable by death. When she raised these issues with Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov, he became contemptuous, dismissing concerns as "sentimental nonsense." Following the enthusiastic reception to her Pride remarks at the State Department, Clinton delivered a major speech on LGBT rights in Geneva at the UN Human Rights Council headquarters. She wanted the speech to be measured yet powerful, acknowledging religious and cultural traditions while firmly establishing that "gay rights are human rights, and human rights are gay rights." Rather than naming and shaming specific countries, she highlighted positive examples from non-Western nations like Mongolia, Nepal, and South Africa. The speech resonated globally, appearing on countless Pride banners and posters worldwide. After leaving the State Department in 2013, Clinton continued working on "the great unfinished business of the 21st century" through the Clinton Foundation. With the approaching twentieth anniversary of the Beijing Conference, she developed the No Ceilings: The Full Participation Project to evaluate progress since Beijing, identify remaining gaps, and create a 21st-century agenda addressing new challenges like the digital divide between women and men online.

Epilogue: A Nation at a Crossroads

During their final trip together to Burma in November 2012, Clinton reflected on how far they'd come since that meeting in Dianne Feinstein's living room four years earlier. On Air Force One to Cambodia, President Obama surprised her by asking if she'd stay on for his second term. Despite feeling the tug of her "service gene," she declined, knowing diplomacy is a relay race and she was nearing the end of her leg. On February 1, 2013, her final day at State, Clinton wrote John Kerry a letter, signed her resignation, and said goodbye to the dedicated staff. Looking ahead, she believed Americans must decide whether they'll learn from history to defend their values in pursuit of a more just world. At home, they needed good jobs, economic opportunity, and an end to political dysfunction. As Clinton wrote her book from her home in Chappaqua during 2013-14, she and Bill received wonderful news about becoming grandparents. When asked if she'd run for President in 2016, she hadn't decided yet, but knew the important questions weren't "Do you want to be President?" or "Can you win?" but "What's your vision for America?" and "Can you lead us there?" Whatever she decided, Clinton was grateful for having represented America and believed the nation's future remained full of possibility. But for that day, at least, she just wanted to stretch her legs and enjoy the spring. Everywhere around her there was new life. There had been too few quiet moments like these over the years, and she wanted to savor them. The time for another hard choice would come soon enough.
