This requires departing from one's private situation to adopt "a point of view common to him with others." We can maintain something of Kant's spirit without his full ambition. Someone who breaks a promise intentionally may not be in a state of self-contradiction, but they couldn't expect their principle to be accepted in any cooperative conversation aimed at mutual agreement. By turning their back on the cooperative process of reasoning, they show no respect for others' perspectives-a form of unreasonableness. Our social nature reinforces this: when I present reasons for my actions, I implicitly hope you'll see them as permissible. As long as I need that recognition, I must seek justification from a common viewpoint. The common point of view can sometimes seem like a myth. I cannot literally feel your pain when a piano crushes your foot. From your perspective, the pain dominates everything and gives urgent reason to remove the piano. When those in comfort claim to "share the pain" of the suffering, it can sound like sentimental drivel. What we can do instead is take up others' reasons and make them our own. We don't just understand the person who wants to move the piano-their discomfort becomes our motivation. Good people feel uncomfortable witnessing pain they cannot alleviate. This isn't about procedural rules of discourse but empathy and benevolence, which operate more strongly with those near to us. We began with the relativist's challenge, and our response may seem inadequate. We haven't found authoritative ethical prescriptions built into the cosmic order. No god wrote moral laws into the universe, and nature shows no concern for right or wrong. Yet we humans do have these concerns. Not all principle is hypocrisy. We need behavioral standards for ourselves and recognition from others. Our task isn't to "answer" relativism through some clever metaphysical trick, but to respond from within standards we already uphold. We can admit these standards are ours-just ours. We legislate them for ourselves and others when demanding respect or civility. They give us reasons, not capital-R Reasons. But this understanding needn't be corrosive or skeptical. Rather, it can energize us to defend these standards when threatened. Is there moral knowledge? Moral progress? These questions must be answered from within our moral perspective. Fortunately, there are countless small certainties: happiness is preferable to misery, dignity better than humiliation, suffering is bad, death worse than life, finding common ground better than manipulative contempt. Progress must be judged by our own values, but this doesn't require triumphalism. We can critique our ethical atmosphere, sometimes finding it worse than before. Yet reflecting on increased sensitivity to environment, gender, and difference, we can see small, hard-won, fragile but undeniable causes for pride. If we're careful, mature, imaginative, fair, nice, and lucky, the moral mirror may not show saints-but need not show monsters either.
