A rural patriarch with numerous children and grandchildren visited a BMW dealership in Yiwu. When shown a 2-million-yuan BMW 760Li, he couldn't understand its technical features but was immediately convinced to buy it when told the driver's seat alone required leather from two cows. This cattle-herder-turned-millionaire purchased the luxury car for himself and BMWs from the 5 and 3 series for his extended family, paying entirely in cash carried in cardboard boxes. China's thirty-year economic miracle represents countless individual miracles created at the grassroots level. These entrepreneurs dare to think and act boldly, sometimes even illegally, exploiting loopholes in China's slowly developing legal system. Their courage stems from having nothing to lose - "the barefoot do not fear the shod." Almost all of China's recent multimillionaires rose from humble beginnings, with their stories featuring dramatic rises and sometimes equally dramatic falls. The Cultural Revolution similarly featured dramatic rises and falls from the grassroots. Wang Hongwen rose from security guard at a textile mill to become China's third most powerful leader in just seven years, only to be imprisoned after Mao's death and die in obscurity from liver cancer. In Yu's town, a previously timid forty-year-old man established his one-man "Invincible Mao Zedong Thought Publicity Team" after being rejected by other rebel organizations. He transformed completely, strutting through town with his official seal hanging from his waistband, a whistle around his neck, and Mao's quotations in hand. He would randomly blow his whistle on the street, commanding passersby to read aloud from their Little Red Books.

Contemporary China can be understood through the lens of the copycat phenomenon - a national myth playing out at the popular level. The term "copycat" evolved from meaning a fortified mountain hamlet to representing imitation, counterfeiting, and deviation from standards with an anarchist spirit. Copycat cell phones began by imitating major brands like Nokia and Samsung with similar names like "Nokir" and "Samsing." By avoiding research costs, they captured the low-end market with their cheap prices and decent functionality. The copycat industry grew rapidly, with one brand even using President Obama as an unauthorized spokesman for their "Blockberry" phones. Even Mao Zedong has become subject to copycatting. A karaoke parlor displayed posters of Mao with a microphone, singing patriotic songs. Hunan province held a competition for Mao look-alikes to boost tourism, attracting 130 contestants who mimicked his appearance, accent, and mannerisms. After watching him perform just two extractions, Yu was thrust into extracting teeth himself, terrified but mimicking his every move.

Yu illustrates this with multiple examples: a newspaper falsely claiming Bill Gates leased a Beijing penthouse, entrepreneurs using CCTV's "Bidding King" auction to secure bank loans, and citizens bamboozling the government through fake divorces to avoid teacher examinations or maximize housing compensation during urbanization. Bamboozle has infiltrated everyday language - businessmen "bamboozle" deals, professors "bamboozle" lectures, friends "bamboozle" relationships, and children even buy "bamboozle cards" as status symbols. This widespread acceptance reflects China's confused value system and breakdown of social morality - a concerning aftereffect of uneven development over thirty years. Bamboozlers often end up bamboozling themselves - "picking up a big stone only to drop it on their own foot." Yu confesses his first attempt at bamboozling targeted his father. As a child facing punishment, he feigned illness, forgetting his father was a doctor. Learning from a narrow escape, he shifted to pretending internal disorders like stomachaches, which proved more convincing due to his childhood constipation issues. This became such a conditioned reflex that soon he couldn't distinguish between real and imaginary pain. His bamboozling backfired spectacularly when, after nodding along to his father's appendicitis diagnosis questions, he found himself strapped to an operating table.
