If we choose the green path, life continues; if the cinder path, our damage to Earth will bring suffering. We stand at this crossroads now, with scientific evidence warning of climate tipping points and resource depletion. As seventh fire people, we must look for the shkitagen among us-those who've held the spark that cannot be extinguished, waiting to be breathed into life. Shkitagen is a fungus that grows on birch trees, valued as a firekeeper-once an ember meets shkitagen, it won't extinguish but smolders slowly, holding heat. Even the smallest spark will be nurtured in its matrix. We need open eyes, open minds, hearts open enough to embrace our more-than-human kin, and trust in both Earth's generosity and our capacity to reciprocate. We must gather the tinder and be shkitagen ourselves, carrying the fire as it was carried to us. So much depends on the spark.
