He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Vermont in 1879 and his doctorate in philosophy from Johns Hopkins University in 1884, where exposure to both idealism and experimental psychology helped shape the direction of his thought. After teaching at Michigan and then Chicago, he became one of the leading figures in American pragmatism, arguing that ideas should be judged by how they work in lived experience rather than by abstract perfection alone.
