Nacido: September 15, 1890 – Torquay, Devon, England
Agatha Christie was an English crime writer best known for detective fiction featuring Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple, including Murder on the Orient Express and And Then There Were None. She also wrote the long-running play The Mousetrap. Her books have sold more than two billion copies worldwide and been translated extensively.
Agatha Christie was born Agatha Mary Clarissa Miller on September 15, 1890, in Torquay, Devon, into an upper-middle-class family that encouraged reading, music, and imaginative play. Educated largely at home, she developed an early habit of inventing stories, though she did not begin with a clear plan to become a professional author. One decisive turning point came when her sister challenged her to write a detective story, a prompt that eventually led to The Mysterious Affair at Styles in 1920 and the debut of Hercule Poirot. Another came during the First World War, when she worked as a nurse and later in a dispensary; that experience gave her detailed knowledge of medicines and poisons, which became one of the technical signatures of her fiction. Her first marriage, extensive travel, and periods of personal upheaval widened her social observation and deepened the emotional range beneath her tightly constructed plots.
