Cette alliance a marqué la naissance de l'Irlande anglo-normande, bien que ce transfert de pouvoir par héritage ait été totalement illégal selon le droit irlandais de l'époque, qui privilégiait la propriété collective du clan.

Henry II n'est pas arrivé au début de l'invasion, mais il est intervenu en 1171 pour s'assurer que ses propres barons, comme Strongbow, ne créent pas un royaume indépendant rival du sien. Il a débarqué avec 4 000 hommes pour affirmer sa souveraineté, devenant le premier roi d'Angleterre à fouler le sol irlandais. Il a utilisé la religion comme justification, s'appuyant sur une bulle papale l'autorisant à "réformer" l'Église irlandaise, et a forcé les chefs locaux et les seigneurs normands à lui prêter allégeance, transformant une expédition de mercenaires en une colonisation d'État.
Cette expression désigne les "Hiberno-Normands", ces colons arrivés avec l'invasion qui se sont rapidement intégrés à la population locale.
