John Milton (1608–1674) war ein renommierter englischer Dichter und politischer Publizist. Er schuf Paradise Lost (Das verlorene Paradies), ein episches Gedicht, das weithin als der Höhepunkt der englischen Literatur gilt.

Miltons Meisterschaft klassischer Formen und theologischer Untersuchungen glänzt in dieser Auseinandersetzung mit Ungehorsam, Erlösung und der komplexen Beziehung der Menschheit zum Göttlichen.
