Sir Thomas More (1478–1535) war ein englischer Staatsmann, Renaissance-Humanist und der wegweisende Autor von Utopia, einem grundlegenden Werk der politischen Philosophie und Gesellschaftssatire.

Als versierter Jurist und Berater von König Heinrich VIII. wurden Mores Erkenntnisse über Regierungsführung und Gerechtigkeit durch seine juristische Laufbahn und seine unmittelbaren Erfahrungen mit der europäischen politischen Korruption geprägt. Utopia – sein berühmtestes Werk – kritisiert die Ungleichheit des Wohlstands sowie hierarchische Machtstrukturen und entwirft gleichzeitig eine rationale, gemeinschaftliche Gesellschaft frei von Gier.

Mores standhafte Prinzipien führten zu seiner Hinrichtung, da er sich weigerte, Heinrich VIII. als Oberhaupt der Kirche von England anzuerkennen, was sein Vermächtnis als Märtyrer des Gewissens festigte. Im Jahr 1935 als katholischer Heiliger kanonisiert, beeinflussen seine Schriften weiterhin das politische Denken und die utopische Literatur.
