Over the next decade of seclusion, he reconnected with nature, literature, and contemplation. But his ideas continued to evolve. Hock came to believe that we stand at the death of a 400-year-old age while another struggles to be born-a shift greater than the world has ever experienced. Ahead lies either the possibility of regeneration of individuality, liberty, community and ethics, or the equal possibility of massive institutional failure and social carnage. The fundamental question remains: Have we evolved enough to discover the concepts by which chaordic institutions can emerge-institutions with capacity for continuous learning and adaptation, in harmony with the human spirit and all living things? Visa represents just one example of a distributive, enabling organization blending competition and cooperation. The Internet, World Weather Watch, air traffic control systems, and Alcoholics Anonymous demonstrate other forms of chaordic organization. Even the healthy family represents chaordic organization at its smallest scale, exchanging value without keeping records or expecting recompense. What differentiates beneficial organizations from harmful ones is values-the purpose and principles from which they derive their internal being and consciousness. Individual change of consciousness is the foundation without which beneficent institutional change is impossible. "At such times," Hock concludes, "the failure is to fall short of dreaming all that we might realize." We must try to create organizations that reflect the living, adaptive systems of nature rather than the rigid, mechanistic structures of the industrial age. Our future depends on it.
