Contrary to popular belief, this thinking style isn't exclusive to designers. Observing the world and generating solutions abductively is a common human skill that only recently has been viewed as requiring exceptional talent.
Design-guided innovation complements traditional views by focusing on giving products, services, or relationships new meanings. Since things need form to be seen but must make sense to be understood and used, design naturally deals with meanings. By challenging patterns of thought, behavior, and feeling, Design Thinkers create solutions that generate new meanings and activate cognitive, emotional, and sensory elements of human experience.

Interviews help uncover the stories behind users' life experiences, expanding understanding of social behavior and mapping extreme cases. For an insurance company project, researchers examined how people stored policies ("artifact archeology") and used "context awareness cards" with evocative images to help interviewees recall revealing stories.
Cultural probes collect information with minimal interference, enabling users to self-report on their activities in their day-to-day context. Sometimes, understanding users requires literally stepping into their shoes. In "A Day in the Life" simulations, researchers assume the role of users to experience their perspective firsthand. During a project exploring solutions for monitoring chronic patients, team members simulated living with diabetes for a week with an endocrinologist's guidance. They eliminated sugar, limited carbohydrates, exercised regularly, and pricked their fingers daily to simulate blood sugar monitoring.

During a project redesigning the ATM experience, the team created the foundational sentence: "The bank's account holders use the ATM to OBTAIN and/or CONSULT and/or PROVIDE themselves with money." When developing innovative methods for monitoring chronic patients, researchers identified six behavioral axes with opposing characteristics: Independent/Dependent, Disease denial/acceptance, Disruptive/Sensible, Technological/Non-technological, Information-seeking/Non-seeking, and Professional/Personal doctor relationships. Understanding how users interact with products or services over time requires mapping the User's Journey-a graphic representation showing the stages of a client's relationship with a product or service. When exploring railway bond sales, researchers arranged Insight Cards into categories representing the stages of the purchasing process from first contact to repeat purchases. Co-creation Workshops extend ideation beyond the core team, bringing together end users, company staff, and facilitators in collaborative meetings structured as a series of engaging group activities. These workshops typically include warm-up exercises, focused ideation sprints, and concept development sessions. For an insurance SMS sales project, the team transformed a co-creation session into a competitive game with clear rules and point systems. The Menu of Ideas serves as a comprehensive catalog of all generated ideas, including detailed comments, elaborations, and potential business opportunities. For a chronic patient monitoring project, the team created a structured Menu with 66 ideas organized into individual cards. Each card specified both the patient's stage (prevention, diagnosis, or treatment) and the actors involved (policyholder, insurer, physician), along with implementation requirements and potential barriers. To select the most promising ideas for implementation, the Decision Matrix validates generated ideas against carefully defined Guiding Criteria and specific persona needs. In an ATM innovation project, ideas were evaluated against multiple criteria including opportunity areas, interface types, user context adherence, and market innovation level. Each idea received weighted scores across these dimensions, ensuring objective evaluation. Volumetric Models represent physical products, making ideas tangible by transforming concepts into concrete objects for validation. They also mapped the Traveler's Journey from pre-trip planning through airport departure.

The Door-to-Door Taxi service offered registered cab service from home to airport and from arrival airport to final destination. Testing through a travel agency partnership showed overwhelmingly positive results, with most customers ordering the service when offered.
Final validation occurred at a travel agency in Sao Cristovao Shopping Center, with team members posing as sales clerks. They created a modular jigsaw puzzle visually representing four core services: door-to-door taxi, luggage special (home pickup and airline check-in), travel tips, and an entertainment center for families at the airport. The service was promoted using balloons attached to paper airplanes with product information, creating an event atmosphere that successfully attracted shoppers' attention.
