Jean-Paul Sartre (1905–1980), Autor von Das Sein und das Nichts, war ein wegweisender existentialistischer Philosoph und Literaturnobelpreisträger, dessen Werke das Denken des 20. Jahrhunderts neu definierten.

Als in Paris geborener Intellektueller studierte Sartre an der École Normale Supérieure und entwickelte sein existentialistisches Gerüst durch die Auseinandersetzung mit Husserl und Heidegger, wobei er radikale Freiheit, menschliche Verantwortung und das Fehlen eines inhärenten Sinns betonte. Seine philosophische Abhandlung Das Sein und das Nichts (1943) untersucht das Bewusstsein, die Authentizität und das Spannungsverhältnis zwischen Existenz und Essenz und festigte seinen Ruf als führende Stimme der existentialistischen Philosophie.

Sartres einflussreiche Romane wie Der Ekel und Theaterstücke wie Geschlossene Gesellschaft dramatisieren zudem existenzielle Themen wie Entfremdung und moralische Entscheidung.
