Our "internal awareness network" remains active even during sleep, overwhelming us with stimuli and causing anxiety.
Fortunately, meditation offers a way to reconfigure this pre-programmed brain. Research shows that regular meditation helps regain control over thoughts, providing solutions to modern problems like stress-related illnesses, anxiety, depression, insomnia, and chronic pain. By rewiring neural pathways and developing certain brain areas, you can take control of your happiness.
The key insight is that happiness doesn't depend solely on external circumstances but on how you experience them. Your brain is remarkably malleable-neuroplasticity means you can train it just as you would train muscles. While the lotus position is traditional in Buddhism, it's not mandatory. I personally prefer sitting cross-legged on a cushion, but sometimes sit in a chair or at my desk before important meetings.
Second, meditation isn't about emptying your mind or disconnecting from the world. The aim is to be extremely focused, even if only for seconds. Meditation teaches you to remain attentive and aware of what's happening around you by fixing your awareness on an object and opening your mind to present-moment stimuli.
Third, meditation isn't inherently religious. When I asked the Dalai Lama what was more important-praying or meditating-he clearly chose meditation. Modern meditation forms are inspired by Eastern traditions but adapted for Western purposes. You don't need to be Buddhist, Hindu, or religious to benefit. Skepticism is warranted when evaluating meditation's health benefits. The Dalai Lama himself acknowledged meditation's limitations when asked if it could cure all illnesses, replying that if it could, he wouldn't suffer from knee pain. The mindfulness industry, valued at $1.1 billion in 2017 and projected to reach $2 billion by 2022, has attracted marketing specialists capitalizing on health-related fads. However, meditative traditions weren't developed for medical or financial purposes.
Scientific evidence confirms that regular meditation changes brain structure, but we must carefully evaluate its impact on general health without making unrealistic claims. Research has examined meditation's benefits for chronic pain, anxiety, and depression, but meditation isn't just for the ill or unhappy-it can help everyone manage stress, enhance creativity, improve attention, and potentially extend lifespan.

As a neurologist, I regularly see patients seeking instant relief from headaches, pain, depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders. While medication has its place, alternatives like meditation often have fewer side effects. The opioid crisis claims 128 American lives daily, and European countries rank among the highest consumers of sleeping pills globally.
Pain is inevitable, but suffering is optional. Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn founded the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Program after discovering during a Vipassana retreat that he could separate the emotional aspect of pain from the cognitive aspect. After some training, you'll even manage during difficult moments like in airplanes, grocery store lines, traffic jams, or before stressful meetings.
Choose whatever position feels most comfortable. Many prefer sitting cross-legged with a straight back and closed eyes, but you can also sit on a chair, bench, lie down or stand. What matters most is feeling comfortable while remaining attentive. As Matthieu emphasizes, posture affects mental state-slouching tends to induce a fuzzy, tense and agitated mind.
Meditate as long as you like. Experts often suggest starting with 5-10 minutes, gradually increasing to about 20 minutes for lasting changes. But studies show even seconds or minutes are beneficial. For children, a few minutes is enough to start. Even just taking deep breaths or pausing to observe your reactions provides a precious moment of awareness and relaxation.
Meditate when you need it or have time. Ideally, establish a routine like meditating upon waking, until it becomes part of your healthy lifestyle like brushing teeth. But flexibility matters-some days you might prefer meditating before sleep, before important meetings, or when you need a moment to yourself amid complaints from partners, bosses or children.
Meditate with whoever you'd like. Some prefer using a timer alone, others thrive in group classes, while some use apps or guided YouTube sessions. If you're seeking meditation for anxiety or depression, be careful about choosing qualified teachers rather than self-proclaimed gurus. Discuss options with your physician.

Breathing, though often taken for granted, is a remarkable phenomenon that sustains life and affects brain function. Unlike other vital functions like digestion or blood circulation, breathing can be consciously controlled, making it a powerful tool for meditation practice.
Brain scans of expert meditators like Matthieu Ricard show that focused breathing meditation significantly increases brain connectivity and alpha waves-not "thinking of nothing" but actually enhancing neural communication. This is the essence of meditation-recognizing distractions without dwelling on them.
For more experienced meditators, specific breathing techniques can provide better control. The balanced breathing technique (inhale for four counts, exhale for four) reduces stress and improves concentration. The stimulating breathing technique uses short, rapid breaths to increase energy and alertness. Alternate nostril breathing stimulates brain and body by inhaling through one nostril while closing the other, then switching. The 4-7-8 technique (inhale for four counts, hold for seven, exhale for eight) is particularly relaxing and helpful for those with sleep difficulties.
