"I couldn't have built my own website then, but eBay offered simple, achievable tasks (take photo, upload, write description) that accumulated into a business," she explains. "That immediate gratification kept me going, whereas beginning with a business plan might have stalled me." Amoruso believes anything can be creative if approached with intention. "Making a smoothie can be creative if you strive to make it the best ever, or boring if you mindlessly throw ingredients together," she explains. At Subway, she enjoyed the satisfying spray of the dishwashing nozzle, arranging dough in perfect patterns, and discovering the secret to perfect cookies by slamming hot trays on the counter. Business is as creative as art. At Nasty Gal, she's both CEO and creative director-roles rarely found on the same business card. "I'm equally creative choosing investors as reviewing collection samples, and have as much fun hiring people as I did with a camera," she says. Her creative process is intuitive yet methodical. For photo editing, she blurs her eyes at thumbnails to identify which images pop without getting distracted by details.

Chapter 12

Betting on Yourself When No One Else Will

What are the chances that Amoruso's business would survive when 80 percent fail within the first eighteen months? "Slim as a snowball in hell," she admits. Her "1%" tattoo, originally representing the outlaw biker ethos of living life your way (not the Wall Street meaning), reminds her how unlikely her success was. In a TED Talk, Mel Robbins calculated the chances of you being you at 1 in 400 trillion-a fact that should motivate rather than discourage. "I wasn't voted 'Most Likely to Succeed' in high school, but I bet on myself and beat the odds," Amoruso reflects. Her path is littered with defying advice, so she encourages readers to feel free to ignore hers. "Just remember: you create the world, blink by blink. If you only listen to others, your dreams likely won't materialize," she says. Life isn't easy-you'll make sacrifices, compromise, fail, break hearts, and get yours broken. But difficult doesn't mean impossible. "Stay hungry. Stay foolish. Compete with yourself, not others," she advises. "Life stops for no one, so keep moving." The real challenge is knowing which rules to accept and which to rewrite. Once you've found success, don't stop. #GIRLBOSSes make it count. "An advantage of being naive is believing in yourself when no one else will," Amoruso concludes. "Bad bitches are taking over the world. There's a chance for you, #GIRLBOSS. So take it."
