We've created a two-fold problem resulting in "artificial maturity": they're over-exposed to information before they're emotionally ready, while simultaneously being under-exposed to first-hand experiences they need for development. This paradoxically expands adolescence, with children entering it earlier but remaining there well into their twenties. Today's youth exist in an artificial world filled with facsimiles of reality: virtual relationships, virtual progress in games, virtual thrills, virtual connections, and supervised experiences with low stakes. While not inherently harmful, these experiences don't provide the genuine challenges needed for development. When adults recognize the disconnect between children's intelligence and emotional readiness, they often become fearful and double down on safety measures. These experiences should be intentional but not scripted, including an element of chance. Examples include spending nights with homeless people or learning to drive. Facing fears produces natural chemical responses that help teens "come alive"-yet we often overprotect them from these growth-inducing experiences in the name of safety. Second, they should meet someone influential. Meeting significant people challenges Generation Z to prepare questions, develop listening skills, and overcome social intimidation. These encounters don't require celebrities-just people students consider important due to their accomplishments. I've introduced my mentees to business leaders like Truett Cathy (Chick-fil-A founder), Ed Bastian (Delta CEO), and other influential figures. Third, they need to travel someplace different. Travel provides education beyond what classrooms offer by pushing young people out of comfort zones and preventing them from operating on "cruise control." New environments require understanding different contexts, connecting with unfamiliar people, and active problem-solving. I've taken students to places like communist Hungary (1987), Romania under Ceausescu (1988), and war-affected Croatia (1993). Fourth, they should chase a meaningful goal. Young people need to pursue objectives with high stakes and genuine meaning under their own control. Past generations matured effectively because they had real responsibility at young ages. When we lower the stakes or create artificial purposes, we produce artificial maturity. Students need goals that have deep personal meaning, stretch their capacity, and have consequential outcomes. Fifth, they must wait and work for something they want. Today's young people struggle with "adulting" partly because they've grown up in an on-demand world where gratification is instant. Patience and work ethic signal maturity-the ability to work toward goals that remain temporarily invisible. When people envision outcomes before experiencing them, their brains release dopamine and endorphins. Finally, they need to practice new habits. Growing up requires adopting new habits and lifestyles as we transition from childhood to adulthood. Many struggle because they want childhood freedoms with adult privileges. Maturation means encouraging students to develop daily routines that prepare them for their futures-keeping calendars, doing laundry, budgeting. Equally important is stopping unproductive habits, making trade-offs. For both my children, we created meaningful rite of passage experiences at age thirteen, arranging for them to meet with hand-picked mentors. These experiences incorporated many of the six growth experiences-travel, meeting influential people, asking questions, and facing fears. Changing Our Leadership to Win Generation Z's Hearts

We must improve how we lead and develop Generation Z. Like Dr. Edwin Bliss, whose outdated medical practices killed President Garfield despite available innovations, we often harm young people through outdated approaches. We've given them possessions without perspective, schooling without skills, taught them to win games but not life, offered explanations without experiences. Today's students, raised on constant entertainment and stimulation, are difficult to impress. Rather than trying to "wow" them like Hollywood does momentarily, we should aim to "win" them through meaningful relationships. While students will binge-watch Netflix shows, the most effective educators get students to "binge-watch" their classes through personal connection and genuine care. To win Generation Z's hearts, we must make four key shifts: (1) Move from playing the hero to being the guide, positioning students as the heroes of their own stories; (2) Support issues that matter to teens, letting them choose and create what they engage with; (3) Present real-world challenges that allow students to develop authentic identities through meaningful action rather than virtual experiences; (4) Utilize social media platforms familiar to them, starting where they are to lead them toward maturity. The Pygmalion Effect reveals how our expectations shape student outcomes. Named after the Greek myth of a sculptor who fell in love with his creation, this psychological principle shows that people rise or fall to meet our expectations of them. When teachers were told certain students were high achievers (though all were average), those students actually performed better. Our expectations affect countless small interactions-giving more time to answer questions, specific feedback, approval, and nonverbal cues like nodding and smiling. We often subtly communicate to students that we wish we were teaching different kids-ones from the past. Faculty complain about phone addiction, poor eye contact, lack of grit, stress sensitivity, weak work ethic, and inability to delay gratification. Students perceive this negativity as rejection: "I wish I was teaching different students, like the ones I had in the past, not you." To effectively lead Generation Z, we must embody five essential qualities: 1) Be responsive-listen well and empathize with their situations; 2) Be inclusive-identify with those unlike us, even our own children; 3) Be adaptive-adjust methods and styles to reach them; 4) Be supportive-see them as humans, not customers, and meet their needs; 5) Be provocative-challenge them to stretch because we believe in their potential. Too many educators lose their passion over time, like the administrator who admitted "I'm just biding my time until I retire." Many of us migrate from being quarterbacks (moving the ball forward, inspiring teammates) to referees (looking for fouls, calling people out of bounds). But working with the emerging generation remains the most noble investment of our time and energy-they represent the future, and while we could find easier jobs, we won't find more important ones. The poem "The Bridge Builder" captures this sentiment-when asked why an old man builds a bridge he'll never cross again, he explains he's building it for the youth who will follow. The message is clear: "Don't ever forget the nobility of your work. You can rest later. Today, those students need what you have to offer. Go build a bridge."
