Pat Flynn’s public career began far from online business. He studied architecture at UC Berkeley and expected a conventional professional life, but the recession broke that path. On June 17, 2008, he was laid off from what he has described as his dream job as an architect. In the months around that upheaval, he turned a study site he had created for the LEED exam into Green Exam Academy, then transformed his notes into paid study materials. The result was both financial and philosophical: within months, the project was generating meaningful revenue, and in less than a year it was earning more than his former salary. That early success taught him a pattern he would repeat for years: find a specific problem, serve a narrowly defined audience, and build from usefulness rather than image.
