Liane Moriarty was born in Sydney in 1966 and grew up as the eldest of six children in a family that treated storytelling as something both playful and serious. Her father famously “commissioned” a childhood novel from her for a one-dollar advance, an anecdote that neatly foreshadows the mix of humor and discipline that later marked her career. After school she worked in advertising and marketing, completed a business degree, and eventually enrolled in a master’s program at Macquarie University, where she wrote the manuscript that became her debut novel, Three Wishes.
