Kai-Fu Lee is a computer scientist, investor, and writer focused on artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship, and China’s technology sector. Formerly a senior executive at Apple, Microsoft, and Google, he founded Sinovation Ventures and wrote AI Superpowers and AI 2041, helping shape public debate on AI’s economic and social impact.
Kai-Fu Lee’s career has been shaped by movement across languages, institutions, and technology eras. Born in Taipei and raised in part in Tennessee, he has often described his American schooling as formative, especially the teachers who helped him learn English and encouraged his early gift for math before he turned decisively toward computer science. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Columbia and a PhD from Carnegie Mellon, where his research helped establish him as an early AI pioneer in speech recognition. Senior roles at Apple, SGI, Microsoft, and Google followed, but the major turning points were institution-building ones: helping create Microsoft Research China, leading Google China, and then founding Sinovation Ventures in 2009.
