Julia Quinn reached historical-romance prominence by an indirect route. A graduate of Harvard & Radcliffe Colleges with a degree in art history, she spent her post-college years taking science prerequisites and planning for medical school. Then, while deciding between Yale School of Medicine and Columbia’s College of Physicians & Surgeons, she learned that her first two novels had sparked a bidding war. Quinn deferred medicine, briefly tried Yale anyway, and soon left to write full time, turning uncertainty into a clear career.
