Jim Butcher is an American fantasy author best known for The Dresden Files, a long-running urban fantasy series featuring wizard-detective Harry Dresden. He also wrote Codex Alera and The Cinder Spires. A regular bestseller, Butcher has reached the New York Times list and helped popularize contemporary fantasy blending noir, magic, and action.
Jim Butcher came to fantasy and science fiction early, in part through books handed to him while recovering from childhood illness. The youngest of three siblings, he grew up wanting stories he could not quite find on the shelf, a motive that later became central to his fiction. He studied English and creative writing at the University of Oklahoma, did some graduate work in journalism, and there developed an important mentorship with novelist Deborah Chester. A decisive turning point came when he wrote what became Storm Front for a writing class, then persisted through years of rejection until agent representation and a sale to Roc turned the project into a career.
