Jeff VanderMeer is an American novelist, editor, and critic known for ecological speculative fiction and the New Weird. His best-known books include Annihilation and the Southern Reach series, as well as Borne. Annihilation won the Nebula and Shirley Jackson Awards, was translated into 35 languages, and inspired a film adaptation.
Jeff VanderMeer grew up in the Fiji Islands, later spent significant time traveling through Asia, Africa, and Europe, and then returned to the United States with a sensibility already marked by dislocation, biodiversity, and the feeling that landscapes could be as unsettling as characters. He has lived in Florida since middle school, attended the University of Florida, and moved to Tallahassee in 1992. He began writing young, started publishing early, and, before his mainstream breakthrough, built experience through poetry, short fiction, editing, and small-press activity, including the Ministry of Whimsy. Those early years established the two tracks that would define him: the novelist of the strange and the editor-advocate for adventurous fiction. ((https://www.jeffvandermeer.com/about))
