James Kouzes

James Kouzes is a leadership scholar, speaker, and coauthor with Barry Z. Posner of The Leadership Challenge, a widely used management classic. His work focuses on leadership development, credibility, and exemplary practices, and his books have sold millions of copies and been translated into numerous languages.

Biography & Author's Journey

James M. Kouzes came to leadership through service before he became identified with management thought. Growing up in Washington, D.C., he later pointed to January 20, 1961, as a formative date: as a teenager, he was one of a dozen Eagle Scouts in John F. Kennedy’s inaugural honor guard. He studied political science at Michigan State University, graduating with honors in 1967, then served from 1967 to 1969 in the Peace Corps, teaching in Turkey. Later academic work in public administration and organizational behavior, along with training in organization development, gave him a foundation that blended civic purpose, social science, and practical education.
