James Dashner is an American author known for young adult science fiction and fantasy, especially The Maze Runner series, which became a major film franchise. He has also written The 13th Reality and Mortality Doctrine books. His work has reached bestseller lists and helped popularize dystopian YA fiction.
James Dashner grew up in Georgia, born in Austell in 1972 and raised largely in Duluth, before heading west to Brigham Young University. There, an early urge to tell stories existed alongside a more practical path into finance. He worked in finance and materials management before turning fully toward fiction, a shift that marked the first major turning point in his professional life. His earliest sustained publishing foothold came through The Jimmy Fincher Saga, a four-book middle-grade fantasy series that gave him regional visibility and, just as importantly, trained him in the long-form mechanics of suspense, worldbuilding, and serial narrative.
