Born: January 02, 1920 – Petrovichi, Smolensk Oblast, Russia
Isaac Asimov was an American writer and biochemistry professor whose work spanned science fiction, popular science, and essays. He is best known for the Foundation series, the Robot stories, and I, Robot, and for formulating the Three Laws of Robotics. He published or edited more than 500 books and won multiple Hugo and Nebula awards.
Isaac Asimov was born on January 2, 1920, in Petrovichi, in what was then Soviet Russia, and was brought to the United States as a small child, growing up in Brooklyn, New York. Raised in a family that ran candy stores, he spent much of his youth reading pulp magazines and teaching himself at a remarkable pace. He studied at Columbia University, earning degrees in chemistry before completing a Ph.D. in biochemistry. Although he briefly pursued academic work, the decisive turning point in his life came when his success in science fiction magazines made clear that writing, not laboratory research, would be his central vocation. By the 1940s and 1950s, he had become one of the defining voices of modern speculative fiction.
