Nacido: June 25, 1903 – Motihari, Bengal Presidency, British India
George Orwell was an English novelist, essayist, and journalist who wrote about totalitarianism, political language, class, and imperialism. He is best known for Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four, whose depictions of propaganda and surveillance have had lasting global influence; “Orwellian” entered common usage as a result.
George Orwell was born Eric Arthur Blair on June 25, 1903, in Motihari, British India, to a family tied to the British imperial service. He was raised mainly in England and educated at St Cyprian’s School and then Eton College, where he developed the sharp observational style that would later define his prose. Rather than attend university, he joined the Indian Imperial Police in Burma in 1922. That decision became one of the central turning points of his life: the experience left him deeply critical of empire, authority, and the moral distortions of power. After resigning in 1927, he chose a precarious literary path, living for periods in poverty in Paris and London while gathering material that he transformed into reportage, essays, and fiction.
