Edgar H. Schein was a Swiss-born American social psychologist and management thinker whose work reshaped how leaders understand organizations. Born in Zurich in 1928 and raised in a family that emigrated to the United States amid the upheavals of Europe, he developed an early awareness of how institutions, authority, and social environments shape human behavior. His academic path moved through the University of Chicago, Stanford University, and Harvard University, where he trained in psychology and social psychology. An important early turning point came through military service and related research on indoctrination, authority, and group dynamics, experiences that sharpened his lifelong interest in how people adapt to powerful systems.
