David Allen is an American productivity consultant and author best known for Getting Things Done and Making It All Work. His work centers on time management, workflow design, and stress-free productivity, and the GTD method he developed has influenced executive coaching, corporate training, and personal organization practices around the world.
David Allen emerged from a background far less linear than the system he later became known for. Raised in Shreveport, Louisiana, he attended New College in Sarasota and later pursued graduate work in American history at the University of California, Berkeley. The decisive turn in his career came not from publishing first, but from years of consulting and testing practical methods in live organizational settings. By 1981 he had established a consulting practice, by 1983 he was delivering a two-day course, and by the mid-1980s his methods had reached large corporate settings, including aerospace, where an early form of GTD proved that his ideas could scale.
